Message from the Deputy Premier
World Youth Day 2008 is another opportunity for the people of NSW, and Sydney in particular, to live up to our proud reputation as successful hosts of large-scale international events.
For a week in July (14 - 21 July), Sydney-siders will see around them the faces of visitors from more than 170 nations as they participate in Youth Festival Events, welcome Pope Benedict XVI, watch the Stations of the Cross, take part in the Pilgrimage Walk and join the Vigil and Final Mass at Randwick Racecourse.
In the order of 500,000 people are expected to take part in the Final Mass on Sunday, 20 July 2008.
We know from our Olympic experience that hosting such a large number of people is not easily done. There will be delays and disruptions.
However, we have also learned that if everyone knows what to expect and is able to prepare, then the experience can be positive.
Patience, planning and goodwill will make Sydney an exciting and enjoyable place to be.
This event will be another opportunity for us to showcase our spectacular city and our great hospitality. Additionally, it will stand us in good stead to host other international events in the future.
John Watkins
