Randwick Racecourse and Centennial Park are key venues for World Youth Day with about 225,000 people expected at the racecourse on Saturday 19 July for an evening vigil with the Pope, with a further 90,000 expected at Centennial Park. The Final Mass on Sunday 20 July is expected to attract a crowd of 500,000 people across both the racecourse and Centennial Park.
On Friday 18 July there will be changes to local and regional traffic routes, bus routes and parking conditions, continuing until Monday 21 July at 4am.
Roads closed include Alison Road between Anzac Parade and Botany Street (Thursday 17 July at 12 midnight until Monday 21 July at 4am), and Anzac Parade between Alison Road and Moore Park Road (Saturday 19 July at 2am until Monday 21 July at 4am). For the full list of road closures and special event clearways, visit the RTA website.
There will also be changes to Doncaster Avenue between Alison Road and Anzac Parade. This closure will be lifted on Monday 21 July at 4am.
The local access area map for Doncaster Avenue shows local residents how they can continue to access their streets during World Youth Day celebrations from Friday 18 July at 8pm until Monday 21 July at 4am.
As a result of these road closures, there will be changes to bus routes operating from Randwick via Alison Road. Information is available via the Eastern Suburbs bus changes webpage. For specific route information, visit the Transport InfoLine website.
A special event parking scheme will be implemented in the Eastern Suburbs, including Kensington and Kingsford, on Friday 18 July, Saturday 19 July and Sunday 20 July. The parking scheme generally covers an area approximately 2km from Randwick Racecourse. Read more about the special event parking scheme.
In addition, residents on the eastern side of Doncaster Avenue have been provided with details of alternative parking arrangements for the period where their side of the street is made inaccessible to vehicles. Residents living on the eastern side of Doncaster Avenue who are concerned about such impact should contact WYDCA Community Relations on 1300 360 933 or email contactus@wydca.nsw.gov.au.
