Residents in Millers Point and The Rocks

World Youth Day 2008 is being celebrated in Sydney from Tuesday 15 until Sunday 20 July, with many events taking place at the Sydney Opera House, the Domain, Hyde Park and Barangaroo (East Darling Harbour).

This will be the first time that Barangaroo has been used for events, with 150,000 people expected for the World Youth Day Opening Mass on Tuesday 15 July. The Arrival of the Pope on the Harbour on Thursday 17 July will see an expected 150,000 people at Barangaroo, and large crowds lining the Sydney Harbour foreshore to view the Papal Boat-a-cade. Large numbers of people will also be in the city for the Stations of the Cross on Friday 18 July, with stations at the Opera House, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour.

Millers Point’s proximity to Barangaroo and other World Youth Day venues means large numbers of pilgrims will travel through the area on their way to and from events.

For this reason several of the key roads into Millers Point, including Hickson Road, Argyle Street, Kent Street and George Street, and key local roads within Millers Point, including Dalgety Road, High Street, Towns Place and Windmill Street, will be closed for all or part of the week.

Access into Millers Point and The Rocks will be via either Kent Street or Cumberland Street. The RTA has produced flyover maps to show these access points.

There will be managed access north of the intersection of Kent and Argyle Streets for crowd control and safety. There are no restrictions on who can enter this area but street parking past this point is for vehicles displaying resident stickers only. All Millers Point residents will be able to access their properties by car but may not be able to park immediately outside their home.

For the full list of road closures and special event clearways, including those outside your immediate area, visit the RTA website.

There will be significant changes to bus routes and terminals in the city during the week of World Youth Day. With the closure of George Street northbound from 10am to midnight Tuesday to Friday, bus routes will be diverted to parallel roads.

Excluding Thursday afternoon, all Millers Point services (with the exception of the 339 service to Clovelly) will continue to terminate at the Argyle Street depot. Bus route 339 will terminate at Gresham Street, Circular Quay during the week.

On the afternoon of Thursday 17 July, Millers Point bus services will terminate at Wynyard Station.
