Residents in North Sydney
World Youth Day 2008 is being celebrated in Sydney from Tuesday 15 until Sunday 20 July with events at venues including Sydney Opera House, Randwick Racecourse, Centennial Park, the Domain, Hyde Park and Barangaroo at East Darling Harbour. There will be impact on North Sydney, particularly in the area of Mary MacKillop Chapel. North Sydney is also the starting point for the Pilgrimage Walk on Saturday 19 July.
World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world with 185,000 visitors expected in Sydney including 125,000 people from overseas.
Mary MacKillop Chapel
A constant flow of pilgrims is expected at The Chapel of Mary Mackillop in Mount Street, North Sydney during the week of World Youth Day; with the Sisters running an organised program of events and activities.
Pilgrims will travel from North Sydney via Blue Street and through Shore College with the assistance of volunteer wayfinding guides. A number of coach movements are expected around Blue Street.
Pilgrimage Walk – Saturday 19 July
On Saturday 19 July, about 225,000 people are expected to walk from either North Sydney or Central Station to Randwick Racecourse for an Evening Vigil with the Pope.
Pilgrims will start from 5.30am at North Sydney walking across the Harbour Bridge with the last walkers crossing the Bridge about 2pm. The majority of pilgrims are expected to arrive by train; with pilgrims alighting at both North Sydney and Milsons Point station. Some large groups are expected to arrive by coach.
A number of roads in North Sydney are closed or have special event clearways in place on Saturday 19 July to support the large crowds. Pilgrims will be allocated a Bridge crossing time to control crowd flow.
Road closures on Saturday 19 July between 2am and 5pm include the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Pacific Highway between Miller Street and Bradfield Highway, and Blue Street between Miller Street and Pacific Highway.
