Extensive changes to bus services in the CBD and the Eastern Suburbs will be in place for World Youth Day celebrations in July, with temporary bus terminal and route diversions to be introduced around CBD and Eastern Suburb venues.

World Youth Day will mean extra tourists in and around Sydney for the week long celebration and Sydneysiders will need to plan ahead when journeying around the city and Eastern Suburbs, particularly around Randwick Racecourse.

More than one quarter of all State Transit routes will have some change. Bus services will be re-routed around event venues and temporary bus terminals put in place.

World Youth Day organisers say registrations are well on track to achieving the target of 225,000 participants. The 125,000 international visitors expected to attend; with a further 40,000 people from Sydney and 60,000 from other parts of Australia.

With more than 300 road closures and over 500 special event clearways in place for World Youth Day events, there will be significant disruptions to traffic and as a result changes to regular bus services.

A great deal of forward planning has gone into alternative bus arrangements to minimise disruptions to regular commuters.

If people are coming into the CBD or travelling from the Eastern Suburbs by public transport they need to be mindful of these changes.

The message to visitors and commuters alike is to plan your travel in advance to account for any delays and allow plenty of extra time for your journey.

More than 16,500 additional bus trips will be operating across the network to cater for more than 825,000 additional passenger trips on Sydney buses.
