Interstate Road Travel

Information about interstate road travel

There are potentially more than 100,000 pilgrims from across Australia travelling by various means to Sydney to participate in the World Youth Day week of activities.

Pilgrims will also be returning to interstate home cities, after the conclusion of the final mass on Sunday 20 July.

Those travelling by car will include both domestic and international pilgrims, as well as NSW families travelling with their school-aged children on holidays (NSW school holiday dates are 5–20 July.)

Guide for International Drivers has been produced to assist international pilgrims driving to and from Sydney, and outlines road rules and safety measures to make long-distance Australian driving as safe and comfortable as possible.

You will find roadside rest stops on all main country roads. During state school holidays, some states - including NSW and Queensland - operate a Driver Reviver scheme, where roadside rest stops, run by volunteers, provide free tea and coffee for car drivers.

Click on the weblinks below for further information for the Driver Reviver operating days during the school holidays:

ACT: 5 – 20 July

New South Wales: 5 – 20 July

Queensland : 28 June – 13 July

Victoria: 28 June – 13 July

South Australia : 5 – 20 July

Western Australia: 5 – 20 July

Some Driver Reviver sites may extend their operations to cater for pilgrims returning home on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 July - keep an eye out for sites as you drive.

For more information on Driver Reviver, visit the national Driver Reviver website.
