  • About 8,000 volunteers will assist the World Youth Day 2008 Local Organising Committee (WYD2008) the Catholic Church body organising the event.

    If you are NOT a current NSW Public Sector employee and would like to volunteer, you can find more information about WYD2008 volunteer opportunities and to apply to be part of the WYD2008 Volunteer Program by clicking here.

    At the same time, about 500-600 Public Sector employees will assist the State Government's World Youth Day Coordination Authority (WYDCA) which was set up to coordinate and manage the delivery of integrated government services to support World Youth Day 2008.  The NSW State Government has established a separate volunteer program for current NSW Public Sector employees to contribute to World Youth Day events through Circular No. 2008 - 07.  Click here for a copy of this Circular.

    Please note: special leave provisions (as per Circular No. 2008 - 07) are only applicable for Public Sector employees who volunteer for the WYDCA Volunteer Program.  If you choose to volunteer for the WYD2008 Volunteer Program, special leave provisions will not apply.

    Are you a NSW Public Sector employee?

    The WYDCA Volunteer Program offers Public Sector employees an opportunity to volunteer as ambassadors representing the state of NSW to the 500,000 event attendees expected during the week long event.

    WYDCA Volunteers will reflect the warmth, openness and cultural diversity that mark Australia as the 2008 host and leave visitors with a memorable and positive image of their time in Sydney for World Youth Day 2008.

    Volunteering at World Youth Day 2008 will be a unique opportunity for Public Sector employees to participate at a pre-eminent and historic event in Australia.

    As a WYDCA Volunteer, your role will focus on providing information and helping people get to where they need to go throughout the city and surrounding precincts.

    Whatever your background, beliefs or interests, World Youth Day 2008 is a special opportunity to experience the largest youth event in the world with more than 215,000 visitors to Sydney expected, including 125,000 international visitors. As a WYDCA Volunteer you’ll be part of a team showcasing and helping Sydney and NSW be good hosts to the youth of the world, continuing the excellent tradition established during the Olympic Games.

    What type of work will I be doing as a WYDCA Volunteer?

    The primary duties and responsibilities of WYDCA Volunteers include:

    • Directing and facilitating pedestrians so event attendees follow pre-determined walking routes within the city and other precincts.
    • Providing event related and other relevant information to event attendees about the event schedule, venues, walking routes, local tourism and general information.
    • Keeping the non-event community in the city informed about changes to traffic or transport services related to WYD08.
    • Other ad hoc duties to support volunteers carrying out other tasks.

    Please note many volunteer roles involve standing for an extended period.

    What days and hours will I be expected to volunteer?

    A normal volunteer shift will be around 8 hours in duration including breaks, but some roles/days may occasionally require slightly longer or shorter shifts.

    All WYDCA Volunteers will be required for a minimum of three shifts from Tuesday 15 July to Sunday 20 July.

    Please note this event will be held during school holidays.

    What qualities should I have to be a suitable WYDCA Volunteers?

    • Team player
    • Flexibility
    • Reliability
    • A positive “can-do” attitude
    • Effective communication skills

    Are there any specific eligibility requirements?

    You can apply to be a WYDCA Volunteer provided you are:

    • A current NSW Public Sector employee covered by Schedule 1 of the Public Sector Employment and Management Act 2002, OR a current employee of another NSW Public Sector agency.
    • 18 years of age or older.
    • Available to work at least three shifts (from Tuesday 15 July to Sunday 20 July).
    • An Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident or holder of a valid work or student (with Permission to Work authority) visa. Please contact the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to determine your work eligibility.

    Will there be training?

    An appropriate training package and pre-shift briefings will be provided to ensure you have the required skills and information to perform your role effectively.

    What do I get for volunteering?

    By becoming a WYDCA Volunteer you will have the chance to be involved in the largest international event held in Australia since the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

    All WYDCA Volunteers will also receive:

    • A unique event uniform specifically designed for WYDCA Volunteers.
    • Meal provision whilst at work.
    • Public transport (trains and/or buses) to and from work within the Sydney suburb transport network (bounded by Bondi Junction, Berowra, Carlingford, Richmond, Emu Plains, Macarthur, Waterfall and Cronulla).  Please note that any transport beyond these boundaries is at the volunteer's expense and that no overnight accommodation is available.
    • Training.
    • Certificate of appreciation.
    • The opportunity to meet and work with a diverse and enthusiastic range of people from around the world.
