List of NSW government schools providing World Youth Day accommodation

Details of 93 State schools in the Sydney metropolitan area that will be home for up to 10,000 World Youth Day pilgrims next month have been released.

The school accommodation plan will bring World Youth Day visitors into suburbs across Sydney - into people’s shopping centres, to their bus stops and on train stations as they move about Sydney taking part in this massive event.

During the school holidays, up to 10,000 people will sleep in 93 state schools – chosen based on their location and their having appropriate areas for “indoor camping-like” halls, gyms and multi purposes spaces.

This comes on top of the Catholic schools which will accommodate a further 70,000 people.

The World Youth Day visitors who are staying on public school premises will be supervised by trained people from the event organiser, Catholic Church.

The NSW Government originally offered accommodation spaces for up to 30,000 pilgrims in the Sydney metropolitan area.

Changed accommodation arrangements put in place by the Church, including accommodation for people in Olympic Park venues, means that only 10,000 places for people to sleep are now required.

Government schools accommodating pilgrims are being fitted with extra smoke alarms in areas that will become temporary sleeping areas as well as temporary shower and bathroom amenities or upgrades.

School preparations for World Youth Day are part of the $86 million worth of Government services which will be delivered to support the event.

World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world, with organisers planning for 225,000 registered ‘pilgrims’ aged 16 to 35 to visit Sydney from 15 to 20 July 2008.
